30 years of love for
the set table

For 30 years, Mateus has brought joy and love to every handmade piece, celebrating creativity and unique stories. From the first yellow plate to today's collections, our goal remains to spread happiness at the set table. Join us on this colourful, joyful journey.

The 1990s: The birth of Mateus

When Teresa Mateus Lundahl moved from Portugal to Sweden and found love, she wanted to combine her vibrant Portuguese roots with Swedish design. Surprised by the many white tableware sets in Scandinavia, she introduced the colourful, handcrafted ceramics of Mateus. The first collection featured a yellow plate with spirals, soon followed by more colours, patterns, and shapes.

The 2000s: The Lace era

In the 2000s, Mateus introduced the Lace Collection, which quickly became a favorite and remains part of our range today. Collaborations with top photographers like Denise Grünstein brought these pieces to life in stunning series like "Seasons of the Year" and "Paradise."

The 2010s: Ceramics for new generations

In 2015, a new chapter began as Filippa, who spent her childhood helping her mom Teresa pack plates in the garage, officially joined the company. Her debut, the playful Bubbles collection, was an instant hit, showcasing her creative talent.

Mateus flagship store

Riding the wave of renewal, Mateus opened its first flagship store at Karlavägen in Stockholm in 2017—a place where each collection is displayed in all its glory, attracting Mateus fans worldwide.

2018: International collaborations

Mateus' journey of creativity reached a new milestone in 2018 with the launch of the “Mateus meets Sam Baron meets Yatzer” collection.

The international collaboration with French designer Sam Baron and Greek art platform founder Costas Voyatzis showcased Mateus's commitment to innovation and global design partnerships. Each piece in the collection blends classic shapes with modern touches, creating a look that’s both timeless yet contemporary.

2024: A tribute to three decades of passion and creation

Today, Mateus is present in many countries and with retailers worldwide. Still, Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) holds a special place in the company's history, as it was the first store to carry Mateus craftsmanship. Mateus celebrates its 30th anniversary with an exclusive exhibition at NK in Stockholm from August 22 to September 3, 2024.
